That’s how it was for me when I lived at the Unarmed Underground Art Centre, an artist’s community, a live/work space, in downtown West Palm Beach, Florida, some years ago.

It was a hamster cage for the disenfranchised, a particle collider for dreams, absorbing and pushing out energy and attracting others into its orbit to participate, refuel, and collect ideas before heading on their way to other planets in the constellation.

That was when I first got the idea for Dumpster Diver the musical, using people who lived at this art’s space as inspiration for the characters.

Here’s a drawing of what I feel the characters would look like.

Faith
Faith is the main character, a nomadic hippie who becomes an activist, dumpster diver and the reluctant muse for the Dumpster Liberation Front (DLF).

Trevor
Trevor is another main character, a software developer on the career fast track for a well known, yet controversial technology firm. When he finds out what his company really intends, he has a decision to make: continue working there and keep silent, or joining Faith and the DLF to expose the company’s real intent.

Professor Shelby
Professor Shelby is Trevor’s former college professor and current vice president of Angelwire, where Trevor works. He introduces Trevor the cushy lifestyle of Angelwire and reminds him of the scholarship Angelwire provided during his college years.

Jonchaub
Jonchaub is a member of the Dumpster Liberation Front. He’s based on a kid I met in Burlington, Vermont, named Jonchaub, who was formerly training to be a Greek Orthodox priest.

Melody
Melody is based on a girl I know who is a dumpster diver and a narcoleptic. In this musical, Melody is also a poet. She’s a DLF member.

Eli
Eli is the supervisor of the Dumpster Liberation Front. He’s based on Alan Patrusevich, art director of the Unarmed Underground Art Center (UUAC).

Erin
Erin plays the part of Trevor’s girlfriend. She’s also the daughter of Professor Shelby, vice president of Angelwire and Trevor’s boss.

Meghan
Meghan is the security guard working for Professor Shelby, who begins to admire Trevor’s courage.

Waffle
Waffle is a member of the Dumpster Liberation Front.

Is the bohemian life as romantic as it sounds? Is revenge justified if it motivates you to expose evil and to work for justice?

The musical tells the story of two friends, Faith, a free spirit, and Trevor who believes in playing by the rules. They graduate college together and head their separate ways. Four years later, they reunite. At this point, Faith is an activist and dumpster diver, living with the DLF (Dumpster Liberation Front), and Trevor is a successful software developer working for Angelwire, a well known technology firm notorious for its bad environmental record and for violating privacy rights.

When Faith confronts Trevor with news that his company has evil intentions–to enforce a mandatory chip to replace currency and to outlaw dumpster diving, he decides to verify her claims to prove her wrong. He discovers she is telling the truth, however, and now has a decision to make: join Faith and the DLF to expose the company for what it is, at great risk to himself, or continue working there and living a comfortable life.

What would you do?

After some thought, Trevor steals the company file, joins Faith and the DLF in their travels to an underground cable TV station to broadcast the truth. While traveling and dumpster diving, they are chased by Trevor’s former boss, Shelby, and his minions.

Eventually, the DLF, Faith, Trevor are surrounded at the TV station. Are they captured? Do they escape?

Dumpster Diver the musical is a story of friendship, adventure, and travel.

The musicals that have inspired me include The Sound of Music, with it’s brilliant score by Rogers and Hammerstein, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

About Dumpster Diver the musical
Dumpster Diver the musical tells the story of two friends, Faith, a free spirit, and Trevor who believes in playing by the rules. After graduating college, they head their separate ways, then re-meet 4 years later. At this point, Faith is an activist, traveling with the Dumpster Liberation Front (DLF), and Trevor is a successful software engineer at Angelwire, a well known, yet controversial technology firm.

When Faith tells Trevor that the company he’s working for has evil intentions, Trevor dismisses her story, accusing her of being jealous of his success, telling her he’ll prove her wrong. After Trevor investigates, he discovers Faith is telling the truth. When Faith tells him to join the DLF and expose Angelwire, Trevor has to decide whether to live a life of comfort, or go with her and tell the truth, at great risk to himself.

He joins them as they travel to Nevada to expose the facts about Angelwire on an underground radio/tv station. On the way, Faith is confronted by his friends and co-workers at Angelwire. When they ask him why he dumpster dives, he sings “i feel aliver”.
